Skyrim Scarf - About The Pattern

The Skyrim Scarf is hands down the pattern that I am the most proud of. The designs are very intricate with detailed colorwork, and it turned out exactly how I intended it to. I made this scarf for my husband because he is a huge Skyrim fan. I surprised him with it for Christmas, and he wore it constantly until it got too hot to wear. If you're looking for Skyrim gift ideas for someone in your life, then this scarf is absolutely perfect!

I want to go section by section to show you the Skyrim art featured in this knit scarf. Each section is based on a Skyrim hold, and the Skyrim logo is featured on the back of the scarf. I love knit patterns based on video games because they merge two hobbies into one amazing project! Read below to learn how I created the Skyrim Scarf!

Riften

Knit colorwork design of Skyrim's riften symbol: two swords crossed

The Riften design features two swords crossing each other. This was one of the easier holds to convert into a colorwork chart. I spent hours drawing out the designs in my knitting program, going square by square until I felt like it was perfect (or as close as I could get).

Markarth

Knit colorwork design of Skyrim's Markarth symbol: ram

The Markarth design is one of my favorites. The curve on the horns turned out better than I had expected. It was a bit tricky trying to get the curves to translate to square stitches, but it turned out great and is one of the most recognizable hold symbols on this scarf.

Solitude

Knit colorwork design of Skyrim's Solitude symbol: Wolf

The solitude design took a lot of trial and error to get perfect. I struggled trying to get the detail of the wolf's face into such a small area. I finally got it, and I think it turned out amazing.

Dawnstar

Knit colorwork design of Skyrim's Dawnstar symbol: a 4 pointed star

The Dawnstar design is very straightforward. This one was easy to translate into a colorwork chart. It was a nice break from some of the more complicated holds!

Whiterun

Knit colorwork design of Skyrim's Whiterun symbol: a horse

The Whiterun design is another one of my favorites. Honestly, all of the animals are my favorite. This design took a lot of erasing and redoing to get it just right. Surprisingly, the curve at the bottom of the horse's head was the most difficult part. Curves are not easy to translate to colorwork charts, but I finally captured the horse's profile!

Back of The Scarf - Skyrim Logo

Knit colorwork design of Skyrim's main symbol: a dragon with Skyrim written through it

I didn't want to leave the back of the scarf blank. It just seemed like a waste of perfectly good space. I decided to put the Skyrim logo on the back with the dragon and "Skyrim" written through the middle. It's a really nice touch for the back of the scarf, and when it's wrapped around your neck, it shows to the front!

Winterhold

Knit colorwork design of Skyrim's Winterhold symbol: a castle

The Winterhold design was another that was difficult to squish down into a small space. I had to play around with the proportions, but I think it turned out well! It isn't the most showy of all the designs, but it's still a fun element to the scarf.

Falkreath

Knit colorwork design of Skyrim's Falkreath symbol: a deer

The Falkreath design is definitely my favorite! I love all of them, but the antlers on the deer are just so cute to me. I love how they intertwine with each other, adding a delicate detail. Surprisingly, this one wasn't the most challenging to make. Once I figured out the spacing of the antlers, it was smooth sailing!

Morthal

Knit colorwork design of Skyrim's Morthal symbol: 3 swirls connecting

The Morthal design might look simple, but it was the most challenging one to create. As I mentioned, creating curves on a colorwork chart is not easy. The spirals were hard to match to each other. I kept making one too big or too small, which was always lopsided. After a lot of adjustment, I finally got it to look symmetrical, but it definitely wasn't easy!

Windhelm

Knit colorwork design of Skyrim's Windhelm symbol: a bear

The Windhelm design was tricky because of the curve and trying to get it actually to look like a bear. It took a while to get it because a lot of my attempts just looked like blobs. Getting the mouth to look right with the swirl at the bottom was challenging but worth it in the end!

Main Skyrim Logo

Knit colorwork design of Skyrim's main symbol: a dragon

Last but certainly not least is the main Skyrim Logo. I needed another design for symmetry, so it was the perfect opportunity to add this guy in. Surprisingly this wasn't too challenging to design. The wings were very straightforward. The only issue was spacing them far enough apart to have room for the curvy tail at the bottom.

Dragon Scale Back

Knit colorwork design of dragon scales

The entire back of the scarf is a dragon-scale design. I thought about just leaving it blank, but I liked the idea of more detail, and I'm glad I did. In my opinion, the scarf would look so boring without the dragon scale. They really tie the whole scarf together and make it look amazing no matter how it is worn.

Ready to Tackle the Skyrim Scarf?

If you have experience with colorwork knitting, then you are ready to take on the Skyrim Scarf. Knitting colorwork is pretty straightforward. Just follow each chart square by square using the color indicated. My Skyrim knit scarf pattern is no different. Each hold has its own chart to follow. I even have the charts in two different color varieties to make it easy for the eyes while knitting. You'll feel so accomplished when you finish the scarf because of all the intricate details! Find the pattern on my Ravelry, Etsy, and Ribblr.
